Querrey-Isner Take the Doubles Title in Memphis
February 21, 2010
The team of John Isner and Sam Querrey, in their first ATP World Tour final, took down Ross Hutchins and Jordan Kerr, 64 64. Isner and Querrey both captured their second career ATP World Tour titles. Isner won his first title in Newport in 2008 (w/Fish) and last week in San Jose Querrey earned his first ATP World Tour doubles title (also w/Fish).
Unseeded Ross Hutchins of Great Britain and Jordan Kerr of Australia attempted to capture their first ATP World Tour doubles title together at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship. Unfortunately in the finals they ran across the team of Isner/Querrey.
Querrey, winner of the singles final earlier in the day, is the first player to win both singles and doubles titles in Memphis since American Gene Mayer in 1981. Mayer won the doubles title with his brother Sandy.
Hutchins and Kerr have not dropped a set en route to their third final together. They were finalists in Tokyo last year and in Sydney last month. Hutchins is 1-5 lifetime in ATP World Tour finals, winning his lone title in Beijing in 2008, while Kerr is 9-5 in finals. He is appearing in his second indoor final. He won in Zagreb two years ago.
Isner and Querrey defeated No. 3 seeds Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares in the first round and on Saturday rallied to beat No. 2 seeds and defending champions Mardy Fish and Mark Knowles in the semi-finals.
